Welcome to the Renew Physical Therapy Family!

Mandy Tressel, PT, DPT | Owner, Pelvic Floor Specialist

Hello Everyone! Welcome to my first blog post! I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself and how Renew went from a far off dream in my minds eye, to becoming a whirlwind of reality. The route of my time in the physical therapy world has been a scenic one to say the least! I graduated from the University of Iowa in 2012 with my Bachelors in Health and Human Physiology with the intentions of attending PT school. However, I decided to take a detour (thinking it was a shortcut) and went back to school a year later to become a physical therapy assistant (PTA). I quickly realized my detour was leading me back to my original route and for 5 years, I slowly started checking off prerequisites for PT school while working in an outpatient clinic as a PTA. I attended South College in Knoxville Tennessee where I received my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2021. After working for 2 short years in traditional outpatient private practices, I quickly found something was missing. I was putting in so much time, effort and energy and didn't feel I was making much headway with my patients or in my personal life. I wanted to bring more to the table, in a unique way that I was limited with in the confines of a traditional PT model. I wanted more time with my patients to connect, to listen to, to progress, to HELP without insurance and company policy limitations. I wanted to be more connected to my community and I didn't want to feel bad about spending time networking with other providers and members of the community. I wanted to help lead people towards a more balanced, healthy lifestyle. I wanted more time with my family-- I didn't want to bring work home with me-- I wanted to feel recharged for both my patients and my family. I wanted something to hang my hat on at the end of the day, something I could call mine, something I built-- a legacy for my children. I started doing research and exploring options and within 3 months I had resigned from my salary income job and jumped ship to start up my own private physical therapy practice. WHOOFTA! That was scary! I had no idea what I was doing on the business side of things, I had no patient load and I was out of my savings after 6 weeks. It's because of all of those challenges that pushed me and forced me to success. I had no choice-- it was now or never and I was not going back to help build someone else's dream. Since the birth of Renew Physical Therapy & Wellness on November 2, 2023, I have received outpouring support and guidance from local community members, gym and studio owners, health care providers, family, friends, colleagues, patients and even local PT's. This is the fuel I needed to prove to myself I was meant for this. The journey I embarked on, all the detours and scenic routes have lead me to this moment in time and this is exactly where I am meant to be. Being a present physical therapist for my patients, serving as an educator in my community, and being a loving mommy and wife are among the most important roles I will ever serve.

We Do Things Differently At Renew

Since I could do whatever I wanted with my new clinic, I decided to do things differently, and by differently I mean better. I wanted to revamp or redesign physical therapy as we currently know it. As a physical therapist, I take a fitness forward approach with my patients and every human being that walks through my doors will improve their overall health and wellness through functional fitness. So, gone are the days of riding the NuStep for 10 minutes, or running an ultrasound head over your skin. HERE, are the days of getting to the root cause, using hands on, manual techniques to manage your symptoms, and adopting a functional fitness approach to rehab. In my clinic, you will find dumbbells, kettle bells and barbells, boxes, bikes, rowers and rigs-- all the tools we need to create resiliency in your foundation. I want you as the patient to have autonomy over your own health, which puts you in the drivers seat and I'm just riding shot gun.  I use a 3 step process to help you achieve your goals and more-- key word here being "help".

Step 1: Reset First, we will find the source of the problem and reduce symptoms. We will address neuromuscular functions to help reset the central nervous system and decrease pain and dysfunction.

Step 2: Renew Once we know the root cause of your symptoms, we will rebuild your foundation through functional training and education. We firmly believe in the healing power of human touch, and will incorporate hands-on techniques during sessions.

Step 3: Reinforce

Now that you are back to baseline, it's time to kick it up a notch. This is what sets us apart from other therapy clinics: we don’t stop here. “Here” is where the magic happens. It is our mission that you leave our space with a higher level of resilience than you’ve ever had before. We will train past baseline in order to build a bullet-proof lifestyle so you are equipped with the knowledge, strength and functionality to help prevent future injuries and dysfunctions.

Cheers!
