Pelvic Floor PT for an Active Summer☀️

Summer is one of my favorite times of year. If I’m not at work, there’s a good chance I’m spending time on the boat at the lake with my family as much as possible- soaking up the sunshine, staying active, and enjoying every minute of the season.  We love spending long days outside, taking the dogs along for some of the adventures and making the most of the extra family time that summer brings.

But for many women, symptoms like leaking, pelvic pain, pressure, or core weakness can make summer activities feel a lot less enjoyable. Here’s the thing: those symptoms are common, but they are not something you simply have to “live with.” Pelvic floor physical therapy can help.

First things first: What is the pelvic floor? 🤨

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. These muscles also play a huge role in core strength, stability, bladder control, posture, and even intimacy. Think of it as your body’s support hammock — and when it’s not functioning well, your body tends to let you know.

Signs your pelvic floor might need some attention:

1. You leak when you laugh, sneeze, jump, or work out

If jumping on a trampoline sounds terrifying for your bladder… you’re not alone. Leaking with coughing, sneezing, running, lifting, or exercise is incredibly common, especially postpartum — but it’s also treatable. Pelvic floor PT can help improve muscle coordination and support so you can move with more confidence.

2. You feel pressure or heaviness “down there”

A feeling of pressure, heaviness, or like something is “falling out” can be a sign your pelvic floor needs support. This often becomes more noticeable during busy summer days spent standing, walking, lifting kids, or being more active than usual.

3. Pain is keeping you from enjoying life

Pelvic pain, tailbone pain, hip discomfort, or pain with intimacy are all signs your pelvic floor muscles may be too tight, weak, or uncoordinated. Pain is your body’s way of asking for support — not something you should ignore or push through.

4. You’re pregnant and want to prepare for birth

Pelvic floor PT isn’t only for after baby arrives. During pregnancy, therapy can help improve mobility, breathing mechanics, core support, pelvic floor awareness, and preparation for labor and delivery. Plus, it can help manage aches and pains that tend to show up during pregnancy.🤰

5. Postpartum recovery feels harder than expected

Whether you delivered six weeks ago or six years ago, it’s never “too late” to address postpartum symptoms. Core weakness, leaking, pain, abdominal separation, pressure, or difficulty returning to exercise are all things pelvic floor PT can help with.

6. Your core feels weak no matter what you try

Doing endless crunches but still feeling unstable? Your pelvic floor and core work together as a team. If one part isn’t functioning well, the whole system can feel off. Pelvic floor PT focuses on restoring strength, coordination, and function — not just handing you a list of Kegels and sending you on your way.

You don’t need to “just deal with it”. One of the biggest misconceptions about pelvic floor symptoms is that they’re simply part of being a woman, being postpartum, or getting older.

They’re common but they’re also treatable. You deserve to enjoy workouts, lake days, vacations, walks, and all the fun summer moments without constantly worrying about leaking, discomfort, or pain. And no, crossing your legs every time you sneeze is not a long term treatment plan. 😉

Ready to feel stronger and more confident this Summer? Pelvic floor physical therapy is personalized, supportive, and designed to help you move, feel, and function better. If any of these symptoms sound familiar, we’d love to help. Reach out to schedule an appointment or learn more about pelvic floor physical therapy.
