Whether you're training for a race, participating in a cycling event, starting a new workout routine, or simply trying to become more active, preparing your body is just as important as preparing your mindset. As a physical therapist, I know that staying active can come with challenges but with the right preparation, strength, mobility, and recovery, you can help your body perform at its best.
This September, our team is excited to put our love of movement into action as we join Cycle America for a race on September 24th! 🎉As we prepare for the event, we're reminded that physical activity isn't just about crossing the finish line- it's also about taking care of your body throughout the entire journey.
When training for an event or increasing your activity level, it's important not to jump in too quickly. Gradually building endurance and strength can help your body adapt to the demands you're placing on it and that’s exactly what we are doing! Rather than riding every day, we're training on the bike every other day to give our bodies time to recover, while gradually increasing the duration and inclines of our rides to build stamina and better handle fatigue as race day approaches. I'm going to use this opportunity to practice my Zone 2 training in preparation for my next HYROX which is super hard for me to commit to zone 2- so, it's a good excuse.
Mobility and strength are also key components of movement. Areas like your hips, core, legs, and even your pelvic floor all work together to support your body during physical activity. Addressing weaknesses, muscle imbalances, or areas of limited mobility can help you move more efficiently and comfortably.
Recovery is also a very important part of any training plan. Your body needs time to repair, rebuild, and adapt after physical activity. Prioritizing rest, sleep, mobility, nutrtition, hydration, and appropriate strength training can all play a role in keeping your body ready for whatever comes next.🏋️♀️ Physical therapy can also be a valuable part of recovery, whether you're dealing with an injury, experiencing ongoing pain, or simply wanting to improve how your body moves and functions.
As we get ready to participate in the Cycle Nation race on September 24th, we're excited to challenge ourselves, support an incredible cause, and celebrate the power of movement. We hope it also serves as a reminder that movement looks different for everyone—and every step, pedal, stretch, and milestone counts.
We'll be sharing updates and following along with our team's journey throughout the race on Instagram, so be sure to follow along! If you'd like to support our team and the fundraiser, we'll also include a link to our team page for anyone who would like to donate. Here's to training smart, moving with confidence, and enjoying the journey all the way to the finish line!
